Imphal, February 23 2024:
Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has appealed to the Governor to present her inaugural speech on the first day of the Manipur Legislative Assembly session on February 28 in Meeteilon.
Addressing media persons at its Season Market office, near IMC office here, on Friday, president Khaidem Ingocha said that MEELAL submitted a memorandum to Governor Anusuiya Uikey on February 20 urging her to deliver the inaugural speech in Meeteilon as Meiteilon (Manipuri language) is the lingua franca of Manipur.
He further said that since majority of the state's population is not proficient in either English or Hindi, it would be appropriate to deliver the speech in Meeteilon.
Ingocha also urged authority concerned for documentation of the translated Manipuri version of the inaugural speech in Meetei Mayek in addition to the current usage of Bengali script.
While pointing out the need to include separate budget for promotion and development of Meetei Mayek (script), he proposed that the same be prioritised during the assembly session.
He further said that the assembly should discuss and-adopt resolutions to include Meeteilon as one of the classical languages of India and press the central government for the same.
The president also called upon the House members to deliberate on allowing candidates to appear medical, civil service and other competitive examinations in Meetei Mayek, adopt resolution and send the recommendation to the central government.
He also reminded that Meetei Mayek has been recognised as one of the languages for learning and discussion in the USA and Japan while books of established authors have been included in the Oxford University syllabus.
Khaidem Ingocha maintained state that MEELAL has branch office in Cachar and plans to include Meetei Mayek in the academic syllabus.
The Assam government had even taken up steps to include Meetei Mayek in the school syllabus, he added.
