Address the Manipur issue: WMC to PM

Imphal, December 05 2024: The World Meetei Council (WMC) has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister for his immediate intervention to resolve the Manipur crisis.

The violence and devastation that has plagued Manipur since May 3, 2023, has caused immense suffering to all sections of society, regardless of religion or caste.

Months into the crisis, it is evident that the State Government, led by Biren Singh, is unable to restore normalcy, said the World Meetei Council.

The Chief Minister seems to be deflecting responsibility and continues to blame others, rather than addressing the core issues at hand, it said in the memorandum.

"Your leadership on the global stage has been widely recognized, with discussions about your potential Nobel Peace Prize nomination growing louder.

However, the ongoing situation in Manipur could tarnish your reputation and jeopardize your chances of receiving this prestigious honor.

WMC sincerely hopes that you will be conferred with this recognition, given your contributions to peace," said the WMC, putting forth several suggestions the Centre may implement to resolve the crisis and restore peace in Manipur.

The council said the State Government, led by the Chief Minister, must take responsibility for the current situation, and be accountable.

To demonstrate "your commitment" to the people of Manipur, it may be necessary to consider a change in leadership within the State BJP Government.

Such a move would send a clear message that you are actively involved in resolving the situation, despite Manipur's geographical distance from Delhi, said the WMC.

It then said that the Central security forces must be activated-"We urge that the Central security forces, including the Army, Assam Rifles, and other paramilitary forces, be fully mobilized to address the crisis, rather than remaining passive bystanders.

This falls under the jurisdiction and responsibility of the Central Government, especially in light of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the Government of India and the Chin-Kuki groups".

The WMC further asserted that the ongoing Parliament session should have a thorough discussion on the Manipur crisis.

A National discussion on the matter would allow for a comprehensive understanding of the situation and possible solutions, it said.

"It is crucial to recognize that the current crisis in Manipur is not merely a military issue but a deeply rooted socio-political one.

Rather than solely relying on increased military presence, the focus should be on addressing the underlying causes of the conflict and applying judicious use of forces in line with this understanding," it said.

The people of Manipur are in need of a positive and swift response from the office of the Prime Minister, WMC added.
