Village botanists course ends

Villagers settling in catchment areas like Singda Dam and such other areas should opt for an alternative means of livelihood in place of jhum cultivation as the practice has adverse impact on major water bodies of the State, said Chief Secretary of the State PC Lawmkunga, who is also the Secretary of Manipur Biodiversity Board (MBB) .
He was addressing the valedictory function of a 5-day botanists course today at the directorate of Manipur Forest Department.
The five-day botanists course was organized by MBB from March 24.Experts from Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT), an NGO based in Bengaluru, attended the programme as the resource persons.
CS PC Lawmkunga, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Bala Prasad, Additional PCCF PN Prasad, Additional PCCF (Conservation and Forest Development Agency) K Angami and advisor of FRLHT Dr K Haridasan attended the closing event as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, PC Lawmkunga said that people should realise the seriousness of the increasing issue of water scarcity in the State.
He further opined that such botanist course would surely go a long way in biodiversity conservation.
Bala Prasad, during his speech at the occasion, said Manipur has two biodiversity hotspots and the people of the State should collectively work to conserve them.
Certificates of participation was also distributed to the participating members during the event.
