Rich tributes paid to tribal freedom fighters

In recognition of the valiant efforts of tribal freedom fighters who contributed greatly to the Indian freedom movement, the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department organised a State Level Painting & Photo Exhibition of Tribal Freedom Fighters to pay respect to the tribal freedom fighters on the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas at Tribal Research Institute, Chingmeirong on Monday.
The tribute event was held as a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, TA & Hills minister Vungzagin Valte expressed his admiration of the iconic tribal leader Birsa Munda who led a rebellion against the British.
He also applauded the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who recognised the unsung heroes of the tribal freedom fighters who might have been forgotten altogether if it were not for his (PM) timely action, "The tribal freedom fighters were neverrecognised by the previous governments, but it is only PM Modi who acknowledged the importance of history, its contributors and the tribals' participation in the freedom movement," he added.
The minister also acknowledged Modi for dedicating a special day to commemorate participation of tribal communities in nation's freedom movement by naming it as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas and to be celebrated on every November 15.As a part of the observance, minister Valte honoured Ngamkholun Kuki, who fought against the British forces in 1943 under the Indian National Army.
Ngamkholun, now 95, was'presented with a traditional shawl of great significance by the minister.
The minister also opened the State Level Painting and Photo Exhibition of Tribal Freedom fighters during the function.
The photo exhibition showcased photos and paintings relating to tribal freedom fighters.
TA & Hills additional chief secretary Letkhogin Haokip, Art & Culture commissioner M Joy Singh and TA & Hills director C Arthur Worchuiyo attended the function as guests of honour and functional president respectively.
It was also attended by children and grandchildren of tribal war veterans and freedom fighters.
