Training programme on aromatic crop cultivation

A team of scientists from the CSIR Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh visited Makhan Liangmai village, 25 km away from the State capital Imphal and organised an awareness cum training programme on cultivation and processing of Aromatic crops in North East region in collaboration with Namponliu Associates (Self Help Group) today.
The programme was organised under the CSIR AROMA Mission.
More then 100 farmers of the area attended the programme.
Dr Rakesh Kumar and Dr Gireesh Nadda addressed the training programme about aromatic crops suitable for harvesting in the region.
Speaking to the farmers, Dr Rakesh Kumar informed that CSIR has initiated a mission programme in which more than 5500 hectres of land will be brought under aromatic crops in India.
Aromatic crops are cultivated for high value essential oils productions which are used in perfumery, fragrance etc.
Namponliu Associates has started cultivating aromatic crop- Tagetes minuta, in an area of about 2.5 acres under the technical guidance of CSIR-IHBT, said a statement issued by the Namponliu Associates.
Keeping in view the growth performance of the crop in the region, scientists has suggested installation of an oil extraction unit, said Namponliu Associates.
Speaking about the traditional use of the aromatic crops as medicines, Dr Surjitkumar, Assistant Professor at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, urged farmers to adopt scientific approaches while cultivation the crops to sustain and conserve the crops.
District Manager e-Governance of Senapati district informed the farmers about various Government schemes and credit market facilities available in the State.
Chairman of Namponliu Associates Abonmai said that the cultivation of aromatic crops will enhance the growth of income of the local cultivators and farmers.
Village chairman M Panam urged local farmers to adopt aromatic crop cultivation.
