Imphal, November 07 2010: The task of upgrading the 132 KV capacity power sub-station at Yurembam to a 400 KV capacity power station will begin after the harvest season.

According to information received from the Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCI), the task of upgrading the Yurembam power sub-station into a 400 KV station is being targeted for completion by 2012 .

Upgradation is to be completed to be in time with commissioning of major power projects being implemented in the North East region, the source informed .

The source disclosed that in order to ensure that work on the project being taken up by the PGCI could be started at the earliest possible, the Government of Manipur has been repeatedly requested for handing over the required 27 acres of land.

However, the Govt is yet to hand over the required land, nor payment of compensation to pattadars whose land have been acquired, completed.

Of the 27 acres of land which is to be acquired for the purpose of upgrading the power station, there are paddy field which are awaiting harvest.

So, the work on upgradation of the power station is to be started once the harvesting is completed, the source added.

The source further disclosed that in consideration of the due share of power that Manipur is supposed to receive from power projects like the 600 megawatt Kameng Hydro Electric Project, 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project, 750 MW Bongaigaon Electric Power Project and 740 MW Pallatana Power Project which are being constructed under Central Sector Generating Utilities, steps have been taken up for upgrading the 132 KV power line connecting from Silchar with the PGCI power station at Yurembam into 400 KV power line.

Survey for upgradation to 400 KV power line had already been completed and the task would be implemented simultaneously with upgradation of the power station.

Upgradation of the power line from 132 Kv to 400 KV capacity would be done as double circuit with each circuit having the capacity of transmitting 500 megawatt of power.

Thus, the total transmission capacity would be 1000 megawatt.

However, there is no guarantee that Manipur would receive the entire transmission load of 1000 megawatt.

It would depend on power generation in North East.

The present 132 KV power line can transmitted just 100 megawatt.

As its share of power from the two power projects namely 750 megawatt Bongaigaon Electric Power Project and 740 megawatt Pallatana Electric Power Project, it is expected that Manipur may receive 90 megawatt.

Once Manipur started receiving its due share of power from all other power projects in the North East, the power position in Manipur would improve appreciably, the source said.
