After a four-year hiatus, the 13th edition of Sirarakhong Chilli (Hathei) Festival is set to be held on August 29 and 30 at Sirarakhong village in Ukhrul district.
An annual event since 2009, the festival aims to -promote the indigenous Hathei chilli variety, known for its rich flavour and unique characteristics.
The Sirarakhong Hathei has gained recognition far beyond the state, becoming a key source of income for the village's 300 households, who primarily cultivate this prized chilli variety.
Announcing about the 13th edition of Sirarakhong Chilli (Hathei) Festival during a press meet held at Manipur Press Club, here, on Tuesday, Sirarakhong Hathei Promotion Committee secretary Ezra Zimik said Sirarakhong Hathei received Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2021, officially recognising its originality and uniqueness.
This milestone was achieved due to the support of the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA), he said, while thanking MOMA for its efforts.
Ezra Zimik told media persons that the festival was put on hold in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, but they are resuming the festival from this year.
He also clarified that issues regarding the name in the GI tag had been corrected from "Hathei-Chilli, Manipur" to "Sirarakhong Hathei", ensuring the proper recognition of the chilli's origin as per the aspirations of the villagers.
Zimik expressed optimism of producing around 25 tonnes of Sirarakhong Hathei chilli this year.
He said that they were able to produce around 30 tonnes if weather conditions are favourable but this year, they are expecting a lesser production.
The Sirarakhong Hathei Festival serves as a platform to showcase and celebrate the unique chilli variety, drawing attention from across the state and beyond.
