Hubby stabs divorced wife to death, surrenders

Imphal, May 09 2012:
In a gruesome incident, a divorced wife was stabbed to death by her husband who later surrendered to Bishnupur Police Station.
The incident occured at around 6 pm on Tuesday at the jeep parking of Bishnupur Keithel.
The victim was identified as Maisnam Ningol Khwairakpam Ongbi Basanti (30) d/o M Shyam.
She was staying at her maternal home at Ngaikhong Khllen Mayai Leikai after getting divorced from her husband.
The killer husand has been identified as Khwairakpam Sanamatum (40) s/o late Kh Noren of the same locality.
Local sources stated that they were married after elopement and have a son and a daughter.
However, they got separated following differences in their attitudes around five years back.
The two children are staying with their mother.
The boy was reading in Class VII.
When they got divorced, it was agreed that Sanamatum will have to bear the burden of raising one child, which he fails to keep.
Sanamatum is a driver in Bishnupur DC Office while victim Basanti worked as Anganwadi helper.
She used to lend out money to vendors of Bishnupur Keithel.
On the fateful day, Basanti was returning from Bishnupur Keithel and sitting inside a Jeep at the parking when all of a sudden Sanamatum came with a combat knife and stabbed her on the chest and fled the scene.
Basanti was rushed at Bishnupur District Hospital where she succumbed to the injury.
A public meeting was held today at Ngaikhong Khullen Mayai Leikai and formed a JAC against the killing.
The meeting resolved to oust all the family members of Sanamatum from the village and give their lands to his son and daughter.
They also demanded to hang the killer or punish him with life imprisonment.
The JAC also submitted a memorandum to the Bishnupur SP today.
The dead body of Basanti is still lying at the RIMS mortuary after post mortem as family members refused to take it until the government punishes the killer.
