Imphal, December 28 2024:
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union and Editors' Guild, Manipur have strongly condemned the attack by Kuki militants at Thamnapokpi under Yaingangpokpi police station on Saturday morning, injuring Impact TV video journalist Leimapokpam Kabichandra Meitei while he was on duty.
A release jointly issued by AMWJU general secretary A Jiten Singh and EGM general secretary Yumnam Rupachandra informed that a meeting was convened at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday and denounced the attack.
"It is not unexpected that opposing armed groups clash and suffer casualties, but targeting journalists on duty is unfortunate," it said.
The journalists' bodies noted that there have been several incidents where journalists sustained injuries while covering news on the conflict.
However, injuring a journalist who even identified himself by wearing 'Press' vest will not be taken lightly, they contended.
They further urged journalists covering the current conflicts to exercise extreme caution, and to remain in safe locations while performing their duties.
While appreciating the CSOs, student bodies and individuals who extended moral and physical support to injured Kabichandra, the release wished for speedy recovery so that he can resume his duties.
