33rd Manipuri Language Day celebrated

Commemorating the inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, several organisations celebrated 33rd Manipuri Language Day on Tuesday.
Writers' Platform, Manipur (WRITPLAT) and Jaideep Memorial Foundation (JAM Foundation) jointly observed Manipuri Language Day at Palace Compound Sana Sangai during which a poetry book and a patriotic song were also released.
The celebration was attended by Leikol president Dr Ksh Subadani, Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Keisham Pradipkumar, WRITPLAT president Yumnam Kumar, JAM Foundation president Dr Rajkumar Nayansana, WRITPLAT advisor and singer Dr Hamom Nabachandra and Seva Manipur founder and chief executive officer Dr Kh Chinglen as presidium members.
A two-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to those who laid down their lives for Manipur.
As a part of the programme, a song titled Ima Nangbu Nungsibi' sung by Huidrom Nowboy and an anthology of poems compiled and edited by Kang-bam Ingaremba were released.
In the second session of the programme, Manipur University's Manipuri Department assistant professor Dr Naorem Sanatomba spoke on 'Past, present and future of Manipuri language', WRITPLAT vice president Sh Meghachandra on 'Manipuri literature and Manipuri Language Day' and All India Radio, Imphal approved lyricist Dr Thingbaijam Swarankumar on Reflection of language in present Manipuri songs'.
Meanwhile, Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) celebrated Manipuri Language Day at its Kanglapat road head office on Tuesday with president Khaidem Ingocha Meetei, vice president Waikhom Gojen Meetei, and secretary (finance) Maibam Indrajit as presidium members.
Speaking at the event, Ingocha expressed delight over mass celebration of Manipuri Language Day and called upon stakeholders concerned to contribute towards further development and promotion of Manipuri language and script.
Conveying appreciation to the Union government for sanctioning of Rs 18 crore for development of Manipuri language as announced by chief minister N Biren and Rajya Sabha MP Leisemba Sanajaoba, he attributed the centre's patronage to efforts of the CM and the MP for uplift of Manipuri language.
Kangleipak Loinasilon Apunba Marup (KALAM) also celebrated the day at its Singjamei Chirom Leikai head office with advisor Keithellakpam Sanahongba Mangang as chief guest and president Norendrajit alias Atomba Luwang as the functional president.
In his address, Sanahongba encouraged writers to use Meeteilol without loanwords as much as possible and publish books in the native language.
CPI Manipur State Council also commemorated Manipuri Language Day at Irawat Bhavan, here, on Tuesday with CPI MSC assistant secretary M Joykumar Luwang, AITUC, Imphal East president I Tomba and All Manipur Nupi Marup president Th Sakhi Devi as presidium members.
M Joykumar recalled how people of Manipur and CPI campaigned for inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution and further urged all to work for granting recognition to Manipuri as one of the classical languages of India.
He also called upon the tribal communities to strive for development and promotion of the language as it is the lingua franca of Manipur.
In another release, Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba (WAMA) Kangleipak informed that 33rd Manipuri Language Day was celebrated at Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board Hayingkhongban with its president Moirangthem Naokhomba Meetei, advisor Namoi Tomba and MEELAL president Khaidem Ingocha Meetei as members on the dais.
