Imphal, August 26 2024:
In a move aimed at providing comprehensive support to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) who are seeking refuge in different parts of his constituency, MLA Khumukcham Joykisan has announced adoption of all three relief camps set up in Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency (AC) .
The MLA pledged to address various grievances and needs of the camp residents and ensure they receive necessary assistance to improve their living conditions.
During a press meet held at the Khoyathong-Tombisana High School relief camp located near Khoyathong Pukhri Achouba on Monday, Joykisan acknowledged challenges being faced by IDPs living in the relief camps, including disruption to education, job loss, food insecurity, financial distress, and inadequate healthcare among others.
Although the government is extending assistance, it is insufficient to meet their basic needs and address their grievances fully, he noted, and affirmed to support the IDPs as an elected representative.
The MLA emphasised that the decision to adopt the relief camps is not flaunting of wealth but demonstration of his dedication to public service and humanity.
Condition of the IDPs could improve significantly if other elected representatives take similar actions, he opined, while calling upon his peers to make proactive contributions towards the welfare of displaced people.
The three relief camps in Thangmeiband AC are located at the Khoyathong-Tombisana High School, THAU Ground, and Khomdram Selungba High School.
Joykisan outlined several critical issues faced by the camp residents, including financial support for students' education, shortage of clothing, and lack of funds for medical emergencies.
To alleviate some of these hardships, he has been providing free e-rickshaw services for displaced students in his constituency, helping them commute to their educational institutes and continue their education despite the challenging circumstances.
Joykisan urged all 40 MLAs from the valley and the 20 MLAs from the hill districts to join hands in supporting the IDPs.
He suggested that even if some constituencies do not have relief camps, their elected representatives could still adopt and assist those in other areas.
"The IDPs are our brothers and sisters.
Elected representatives should coordinate their efforts to support them.
It wouldn't be a tough job for all of us to join hands in this regard," he stated.
The MLA also appealed to the MPs to consider extending support to the IDPs.
While conceding about reluctance to cross into other constituencies to provide aid, he, nonetheless, indicated to reach out to the people in distress if the need arises.
