Imphal, April 17 2010:
With installation of water supply scheme and development of irrigation system in Sekmaijin area, a public dialogue was held today at Sekmaijin Thongkhong.
The public dialogue was held with officials of PHED and Minor Irrigation Department under the aegis of Mayang Imphal A/C MLA Dr Kh Ratankumar.
The local people drew attention of the officials pointing out that even as many water supply plants are present in the area, most of them are not functional.
The Government officials said that there is a new instruction from the Government of India to take up water supply schemes in coordination with the local people.
According to this instruction, water supply schemes or RLI schemes should be operated after constituting village water supply and sanitation committees and water user committees.
Revenue collected from the beneficiaries should be in maintenance of the schemes, the officials elaborated.
MLA Ratan-kumar also inspected the dredging work on Khuman Yangbi Lairam Maril, a waterway which connected Mayang Imphal to Bishnupur about 60 years back.
Taking serious note of the deteriorating condition of the canal which has gone dry in some parts while it is in deluge in some other parts, the initiative to dredge the canal was taken up under MLA Ratankumar with around Rs 20 lakhs in the first phase.
Even as the dredging work of the first phase completed today, it is reported that the remaining stretch of the canal will be dredged with money from the MLA Local Area Development Fund.
