12 UGs give in to State Govt

Imphal, September 04 2013: Twelve UG cadres belonging to six different underground groups surrendered before Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh along laying down huge quantity of arms and ammunition today.

The surrendered UGs included six from People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak-Progressive (PREPAK-Pro) including its senior publicity officer-cum-project officer, two from Kanglei Yawon Kanna Lup (KYKL), assistant secretary (external affairs) of PREPAK, one from Revolutionary People's Front/People's Liberation Army (RPF/PLA), one from United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and one from Kangleipak Communist Party-Lamyanba Khuman group.

They laid down arms before Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh during a home coming ceremony held at the Chief Minister's bungalow here.

The arms and ammunition surrendered by them included two AK Rifles along with 221 rounds, two IEDs, nine hand grenades, six detonators and two 9 mm pistols along with one magazine and 20 rounds.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Ibobi said that surrender by UG cadres has indicated that different underground groups in the state have been gratified with the rehabilitation programmes and welfare policy taken up by the state Government for the surrendered UG cadres.

He went on to say that it is not a correct way to reflect the surrendered UGs as people who had been diverted from the mainstream and rather it would be right to think them as individuals who simply wanted to serve the people.

The Chief Minister expressed hope that such UG cadres who have listened to the call by the Government and have reentered the mainstream will certainly help in bringing development.

He assured every step will be taken up by the state Government to rehabilitate the surrendered UGs and they will be provided security protection for their lives.

"We are expecting more UG would be coming out to join the mainstream," the Chief Minister added.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Deputy Speaker MK Preshow Shimray, MLAs N Biren, T Mangibabu, Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga, DGP MK Das and several top police officials were also present during the home coming ceremony.
