Imphal, July 04 2013:
In a move to produce honey on large quantities, the State Government is all set to encourage rearing of bees on a large scale.
According information received from the Industries Department, Government of Manipur, the process to produce large quantity of honey in the State is all set to be taken up under the Manipur Bee Keeping and Honey Mission.
It is said that a series of deliberation in this connection had been held among the top officials of the Industries Department along with the concerned Minister on May 6 last and decided to visit the neighbouring State of Nagaland to inspect the rules and regulations being followed there for finalizing own rules and regulations of the State.
As part of the proposed plan for producing large quantity of honey, training of not just scientific method of bee keeping would be imparted but also on the methods of producing honey and wax.
Moreover, State Government would establish firm as well as areas where the products could be sold and available to the people.
Furthermore, the State Government is planning to determine the number of farmers in the profession of rearing bees so that Manipur Bee Keeping and Honey Mission becomes a successful one.
Nine officials have already been sent for training to look into the implementation of the mission, the report said.
The report went on to inform that the step to import a variety of bees with more honey producing capacity has also been taken up as the bees found in Manipur produce less amount of honey even though it is of best quality in the country.
As a result, there arises the need to set up a honey producing firm by the State Government so that the monopoly played by by companies like Dabur in the State is broken and its products replaced by the honey products produced in the State itself.
The State Government is also planning to produce huge quantity of wax since the demand for wax is much higher than honey.
There are companies coming up across the country which are willing to purchase wax in huge quantities, the report said.
