Patients visiting RIMS increasing: report

Even though the government has been taking up various measures to keep all its citizens healthy, the number of people admitted to hospitals for medical treatment in Manipur has been on the rise, an annual report of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has indicated.
The report released by Dr Jagdish Prasad, Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt.of India on the occasion of 41st Foundation Day celebration of RIMS at its Jubilee hall here on Friday, said that RIMS has recorded highest number of Out Patient Department (OPD) patients in the year 2011-2012 .
The number of patients who visit the OPD in the last five years is- 2007-08 (2,44,699); 2008-09 (2,66,096); 2009-10 (2,75,512); and 2011-12 (2,89,442) .
The number of patients treated in Casualty Department of the hospital too has been increasing.
A total of 1,06,735 casualties were treated in the year 2011-2012.In the year 2011-12, a total of number of 35,547 patients was admitted in various wards and RIMS had done 5,816 and 3,574 major and minor operations respectively, the report said.
However, the good news is that the death rate in the hospital is dropping by 1% in the last two years.
The date rate of patients in the hospital for the last five is- 5% (2007-08); 4%(2009-09); 5%(2009-10); 4%(2010-11) and 4% (2011-12).Presenting the report , Prof S Sekharjit, Director, RIMS said "RIMS is moving in the right direction and its moving fast" .
Further, he added that reformation of administrative system for easier work flow, installation of CC TV and Advance Hospital Information System to improve the security, appointment of super-specialist doctors to provide maximum health care, construction of hostels for professional medical students, opening of free Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) treatment center, National Reference Laboratory (NRL for AIDS) at the department of Microbiology and other various facilities and departments have been started for betterment of the hospital and the patients coming to seek medical treatment.
Speaking as the Chief Guest of the function, Dr Jagdish Prasad said that RIMS is one of the best hospitals in the entire North East region and students from the institutions are working in various premier medical institutions around the country.
It has the potential to develop as a premier medical institute in the country and if the staffs of the institutions are prepared to co-operate, the Ministry is always ready to take the institution at a higher level.
Urging the Director General of the Health Service to upgrade RIMS into a deemed university, former RIMS Director and MLA of Khurai A/C Prof.Ng Bijoy Singh, who presided over the function, appealed all the teachers in the institute to be sincere in their duty.
Guest of Honour of the function, Prof.A Dwijamani Singh, who is a former Medical Superintendent of RIMS, said that earlier people used to regard doctors as next to God but the time has changed now.
In order to regain the lost image of professional medical practitioners from the people, we should learn to sacrifice some of our personal interest.
