Workshop & CME on Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) conducted

Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) Manipur State Chapter organised a workshop on "Live demonstration of endoscopic ultrasound and its therapeutic procedures" at the premise of Shija Hospitals Imphal on July 21.A press release issued by Chairman ASI Manipur State Chapter Dr Palin stated that the workshop was attended by eminent doctors from Manipur including doctors from JNIMS, RIMS, Shija Hospitals, other private hospitals and ASI members.
Dr Malay Sharma, consultant Gastroenterologist, Jaypee Hospital, Delhi spoke on the workshop as resource person.
He demonstrated the latest techniques in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) to the participants including Dr Jugindra S, consultant Gen & Lap Surgeon, Shija Hospitals, Dr Kh Devendra, consultant Gen & Lap Surgeon Shija Hospitals and Dr Goldie L, consultant Medical Gastroenterologist, Shija Hospitals, it stated.
Altogether four cases viz Gall Bladder stones with dilated CBD more than 11 mm, Pseudocyst Pancreas, Stomach swelling GIST & Necrotizing pancreatitis were demonstrated live using EUS during the workshop," it added.
The press statement further mentioned that a CME on "Endoscopic ultrasound & its clinic applications" was held at IMA Hall, Lamphel later in the evening, under the aegis of the ASI Manipur State Chapter.
The CME was chaired by Dr S Samorkanta, senior consultant Gen & Lap, Shija Hospitals & Prof GS Moirangthem, Dept of Surgery, RIMS while Dr Malay Sharma also spoke on the CME a resource person.
Dr Malay explained how EUS can help in diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic and mediastinal pathologies and relatively in pulmonary embolism, mesenteric thrombosis, rectum, prostate etc.
EUS is a newly developing modality of investigation and treatment.
Apart from the endoscopic view provided by the endoscope, there is an ultrasound transducer attached to the tip.
Using this instrument, it is now possible to enter the stomach and intestine and perform ultrasound examination from the inside.
It is a very versatile instrument which can be used to minutely investigate difficult and perplexing diseases within the abdomen.
The endoscopy centre at Shija Hospitals is now equipped with EUS which will be used to treat many diseases within the abdomen and thus avoid many advanced and complicated surgeries.
