Imphal, August 04 2018: North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has strongly condemned the arrest of Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) councillor by the police last night.

The arrest was followed by the dismantling of the dais which was erected at the site where protests had been going on for more than 2 months.

It has been alleged that Facebook posts relating to the matter are being taken down.

This amounts to a massive crackdown on the democratic movement of MU community, said NEFIS in a statement today.

The attitude of both the Union and State Government has been apathetic since the very beginning and the present crackdown is connected with the Government's resolve to curb the democratic movement at MU, alleged NEFIS.

NEFIS had earlier protested against the prolongation of the crisis at MU at Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and demanded VC's dismissal, following which the VC was sent on leave.

But, even in Delhi, the peaceful demonstration was "brutally" stopped by the police and the students were "forcibly detained".

NEFIS stands in solidarity with MU students and resolves to continue its struggle even amidst crackdown, said NEFIS.

CPI (M) Manipur State Committee too condemned the impasse in the Manipur University and voiced its strong support to the agitating students.

CPI (M) secretary Kshetrimayum Santa said that the fact finding committee set up by the Union HRD Ministry was "not" formed under the Commission of Enquiry Committee Act 1952.Stating that there is no provision to restrict the movement of VC out of the State when the fact finding team is investigating the allegations against the him, Santa asserted that the concerned Ministry and authority should form a proper enquiry committee under the Commission of Enquiry Committee Act 1952 to look into the allegations against the VC.

CPI (M) further denounced the action of the State security forces which dismantled the site of relay hunger strike yesterday.

It appealed the Union and the State Government to act in accordance with the aspirations of the students and bring lasting solution to the impasse which have paralysed higher education in the State.
