Four file nomination papers
Source: Hueiyen News Service

Imphal, December 02 2009: Two persons filed nominations for candidature on the last day of filing of nominations for the bye-election to 14-Yaiskul Assembly Constituency.

With this, the number of candidates who have filed their nomination papers for the bye-election has gone up to four.

Today was the last day for filing of nominations for the bye-election to the AC which has been left vacant by the sudden demise of sitting Congress MLA, Elangbam Kunjeshwor.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held tomorrow.

The polling will be held on December 19.The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 5, Saturday.

Two candidates filed their nomination papers today.

Elangbam Suraj, son of the Late sitting MLA, E Kunjeshwor, filed his nomination papers as Congress candidate.

Soubam Rajen, who resigned from the editorship of Toknga daily, filed his papers as the nominee of Janata Dal (Secular).

Jaydev, who had filed his nomination paper yesterday, again submitted another nomination paper to the RO today.

Chief Minister O Ibobi, MPCC president Gaikha-ngam, Ministers and MLAs of ruling Congress were present when Suraj submitted his nomination papers to the Returning Officer (RO), Yumnam Robita at her office at Porompat around 11 am.

Later, speaking at a gathering at the residents of Suraj at Wangkhei Yonglan Leirak, Chief Minister Ibobi appealed to the electorate of the constituency to support the Congress candidate to enable the family of the Late leader to fulfill his dreams.

Kunjeshwor had dreamt of taking up various welfare programmes in the constituency.

The SPF government also extends full cooperation considering that Yaiskul A/C is a vote bank of congress, Ibobi said.

Congress has decided to field the son of the Late MLA so that his father's dream could be fulfilled.

There are many developmental programmes which had been chalked out by the Late MLA.

But he could not reveal the programmes now as the Election Code of Conduct has bound him, the Chief Minister said.

Another JD (S) candidate S Rajen filed his nomination paper today at 1.44 pm at the RO's office at Porompat, Imphal East.

Two other candidates who filed their nomination papers yesterday as Independent candidates are Jaydev @ Gandhi, sitting Councillor of the Imphal Municipal Council and Aribam Jagdish of Brahmapur Nahabam Leikai.

The constituency has a total of 23,498 electors.

Out of this, 12,703 are female voters while 10,795 are male voters.

The polling will be held at 28 polling stations.

State security forces will be deployed in the bye-poll for peaceful conduct, according to the RO.

The category of hyper sensitive and sensitive of the polling stations is yet to finalize.

This will be done by the DC, Imphal east in consultation with SP of the district, she added.

Main opposition who had talked of fielding a common candidate to defeat Congress candidates finally retreated from the fray by announcing that of not fielding.

Despite earlier assumption of sending out a common candidate in the bye-poll by the opposition parties, the same drew blank when BJP, MPP and NCP announced that they will not send out their candidate in the fray.

BJP, Manipur Pradesh was at its best to field former Chief Minister, RK Dorendro till the last minute considering that the constituency is vote bank of the party when the former minister was once won in BJP ticket but dropped it after Dorendro refused to contest the by-poll.

MPP and NCP also announced not to field candidates of the parties with the reason best known to the parties only.
