Absence of slaughterhouse in State is a major drawback, says Dept of Vet & AH Director

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Churachandpur ICAR research Complex for NE Region Manipur Centre organised a training cum awareness programme on "Scientific & Hygienic meat production for local butchers of Manipur" at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat today.
Speaking at the programme as chief guest, Director Department of veterinary & AH, H Chaoba stated that it is the right objective and the right time to organise such training and awareness camp.
Pointing out that there are numerous Zoonotic diseases which is spread by humans to animals and from animals to human beings, he claimed that the World Health Organisation has identified at least 500 Zoonotic diseases.
He stated that the absence of slaughter house in Manipur is a major drawback and as a result necessary procedures including prior check up of animal's body have not been properly followed in the State.
He claimed that many meetings regarding setting up of slaughterhouse were also conducted with representatives of IMC and MAHUD during the previous Govt.Expressing hope that slaughterhouses would be set up in the State eventually, he appealed all to learn, discuss and impart knowledge and ideas on precautionary measures concerning health to be taken up for the time being, during the meeting.
On the other hand, Joint Director (i/c) ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre Imphal, I Meghachandra stressed on the impacts on health as a result of unhygienic, low quality and poor standard of meat conservation.
He said that most of the meat that the people consume is found abundantly in the State however, no one has ever thought about the standard and quality of the meat or whether there is adulteration of meat.
Such negligence has lead to the increase in number of epidemic and diseases, he added.
He expressed his desire and urged to sell or keep the meat in a hygienic manner for the welfare of the people.
He said that the bones left after consuming the meat or bits of bones left aside while dressing the meat, can be grinded and used as fertilizers for plants and at fields as well.
The Central Government has been trying to make North East region as the organic hub in the country, he said.
ACTO (Assistant Chief Technical Officer) Animal Science, KVK Churachandpur, Dr L Babita Devi was also present in the programme.
