No untoward incident, but tension lingers

Relief materials continue to pour in from individuals and organisations from Manipur including Jiribam and Assam for the displaced Meetei people, who are taking shelter in relief camps in aftermath of ethnic clashes that flared up in the district since June 6 .
On the other hand, no untoward incident has been reported in the past 24-hour in Jiribam after the burning of two Meetei houses on the intervening night of June 13 and 14.Since June 6, all businesses and other establishments in the district remained closed due to enforcing of Section 144 of CrPC by the Jiribam district magistrate and the prevailing atmosphere of fear and panic among public.
But on Friday, the main market of Jiribam opened up and saw almost normal hustle bustle as in the past.
Meanwhile, government offices and private firms continue to remain shut with bank branches located in the heart of the district such as Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India and Manipur State Co-Operative Bank along with ATM booths keeping their shutters down.
Hence, people of Jiribam and Jirighat, Cachar, Assam are facing problems in withdrawing money and have to approach private mini ATM service providers to withdraw cash after paying service charges, decried some of the market-goers on Friday.
Meanwhile, Jiribam district administration under the aegis of Jiribam deputy commissioner (DC) Krishna Kumar is continuing to provide relief materials and essential items to internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in the relief camps with grocery items, LPG cylinders and stand fans handed over to them on Saturday.
PHED, Jiribam is ensuring regular supply of water for the displaced people staying in relief camps; CHC, Jiribam is conducting routine checkups for IDPs and distributing sanitary kits; supplementary nutritious food items are being given to children under ICDS project and Jiribam Municipal Council has taken up regular cleaning and sanitation service in the relief camps.
Similarly, Zonal Education Office, Jiribam has started a temporary school at Bidyanagar Multipurpose Sports Complex on Friday with 98 students from class I-XII, 23 teachers and one headmaster.
Text books and notebooks have already been distributed among the students.
In the same manner, preparations have been carried out to open such temporary schools near other relief camps.
