Tamenglong, November 29 2015: A dispute broke out when the district administration and villagers conducted a drive to check encroachment of land evicted for Tupul-Imphal railway project yesterday at Marangching (Makhuam) .

The incident broke out at around 12.30 noon when one individual namely Thuankulung Gangmei (36) of Marangching Part-III claimed a public land, which has been evicted for the construction of the railway project, as his private property and demanded to provide adequate compensation, sources said.

During the altercation, a Maruti Gypsy belonging to Thuankulung was burned down by the villagers.

According to sources, there have been numerous disputes over the said land in the past as well.

After the incident, a public meeting was held where the villagers resolved to take up stringent action against Thuankulung if he initiates wrongful steps to justify his claim.
