Two shot dead, 2 still missing: Tension running high at Kamjong

Ukhrul, December 28 2012: Two persons were shot dead by unidentified armed persons while two of their companions, all from Kongkan village under Chassad police station of Ukhrul district, remain still untraceable.

Locals said the incident occurred around 4 pm today after four of them went on a hunting trip for New Year feast to a nearby jungle.

The two were found shot dead along the village road, about 9 kms from Kamjong.

The deceased have been identified as K.Kumar (56) son of (L) K Horhai and K.Ramshang (38), son of K.Ramyo.

However, Ruikanmi Chithung (39), son of (L) Yuingam Chithung and Chingringam Lk (32), son of David Lk, are still reported to be missing.

Kumar is survived by his wife and seven children while Ramshang was a father of four children.

Four of them, who are all natives of Kongkan, reportedly left their homes with four hunting dogs at around 10am.However, the dogs returned to the village, situated along the Indo-Myanmar international border and located 132 kms from state capital, this afternoon.

Locals said that they heard gunshots at about 4pm.Out of the four hunters, two were found lying dead on the road by the natives who returned from Kamjong at 4.30pm.According to the villagers, the incident could be the handiwork of one non-tribal UG group that has set up a stronghold in the region.

The killing happened few yards away from the spot where security personnel on election duty had been ambushed in January this year.

In recent month, the Assam Rifles set up an outpost in Kongkan.

Incidentally, the killing occurred about 3 kms away from the village.

The bodies were reportedly still lying on the road and police are yet reach the spot till the time of filing this report.

Reports from Kamjong stated that tension was running high in border town soon after the news spread and all the shops down their shutter early this evening.
