Rani Gaidinliu remembered on her 96th birth anniversary

Imphal, January 27, 2011:
Floral tributes were paid to Rani Gaidinliu on her 96th birth anniversary on Wednesday.
She was remembered by the villagers of Luangkao where she was born 96 years ago in 1915.The village is located in Tousem sub-division of Tamenglong district.
Another function to remember her was also held at Imphal GM hall under the aegis of the Kabui Mothers' Association Manipur (KAMA).
Our Tamenglong correspondent reported that the function at Luankao village was marked by a public meeting in which SDO Tousem, Dinganlung was chief guest.
A football tournament was organized by the Rani Gaidinliu Memorial Trophy Committee to mark the occasion.
A total of 17 teams participated in it.
A statue of the freedom fighter was also unveiled at Bora, five km from Halflong.
Prof Gangmumei Kamei, Dilip Thakur, DC, North Cachar Hills district and Ramkuiwang Newme, president Zeliangrong Heroka North East attended as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively in the function.
Commandant of 45 AR Bebe Yadav also attended the function in which villagers of different tribes including Kuki, Hmar and Dimasa were present.
In Imphal, the Kabui Mothers' Association Manipur (KAMA) organized a function at the GM Hall.
Leaders of several social organisations like Zeliangrong Union (ZU), United Committee Manipur (UCM) and others took part in the function.
KAMA president, Kakomlungliu Kamei, ZU (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland), Amu Kamei, UCM president, Yumnamcha Dilipkumar led the people in offering floral tributes to the freedom fighter who fought against British rule in Manipur.
Rani Gaidinliu joined the freedom struggle at the age of 13.She led a socio-political movement to drive out the British from Manipur and Naga areas.
She was arrested in 1932 at the age of 16 and imprisoned for life.
She was freed in 1947 after India gained freedom.
She was honoured as a freedom fighter and was also awarded a Padma Bhushan.
Rani Gaidinliu died in 1993.The Government of India issued a postal stamp in her memory apart from launching a vessel named after her by the Indian Navy last year.
