'No decision on continuation of Alt English'

Imphal, June 15 2013 : Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro has clarified that the State Cabinet has not taken any decision to supercede the earlier decision of excluding Additional English from the syllabus of class IX and X but has only constituted a Committee to look into the grievances of all those students who want to opt Alternative English.

Minister M Okendro was speaking as Chief Guest of the 41st Annual Prize Distribution function, 2013 organized by Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM) at the auditorium of JN Manipur Dance Academy here today.

"Recently, a high level meeting of the State Government was held wherein a Committee was formed to look into the grievances of all those students who want to opt for Alternative English.

However, no decision was taken to do away with the earlier decision of excluding Additional English from the syllabus of class IX and X," the Minister clarified.

Minister Okendro further stated that the incident wherein eight students who were declared failed in the High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLC)-2013 conducted by BSEM, but were later on found to have passed after their answer scripts were re-checked was indeed unfortunate.

Proper investigation would be carried out in this regard and the guilty would be given befitting punishment so that such incidents do not recur, he assured.

The Minister went on to point out that the number of students applying for admission in Government Schools has increased tremendously over the past few years.

There were altogether 2051 students getting over 60% marks in aggregate applying for admission in Science stream at TG Higher Secondary School.

In order to fulfill the aspirations of the students, the Government has decided to admit girl students in Ramlal Paul Higher Secondary School.

New hostels will also be constructed in TG, Ramlal Paul and Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School.

The government would be looking into the shifting trend of students going outside the State for further studies.

The students and their parents should be made aware of the fact that many a students who have studied in Manipur itself have become successful in their respective fields and become responsible citizens, he added.

Minister Okendro also acknowledged that private schools play an important role in the field of education in Manipur.

Delivering the Presidential speech, P Dhanakumar, Chairman of BSEM, said that a student should be brought up with the right form of education from pre-primary level.

The foundation of a child should be solid as it is from here that a student expands his/her horizon in all aspects.

So, there is the need include subjects related to the socio-cultural aspects of the society.

The nursery rhymes taught to children should be made in connection with the culture and tradition of the state.

At the outset of the function, floral tributes were offered to the departed souls of the Award Donors of BSEM, and it was followed by presentation of awards and prizes to the toppers of HSLC Examination, 2013 .

First position holder in HSLC examination, 2013 Miranda Mongjam was awarded a gold medal of 10 tola of gold.

Since she is out of station, the medal was received by her parents on her behalf.

A cash prize of Rs 10,000 was handed over to the 2nd position holder Keisham Luxmirani and Rs 8,000 to 3rd position holder Ratimanjuri Devi.

A cash prize of Rs 5000 each were also given to the students in 4th to 10th position.

Prizes to the winners of an on-the-spot essay competition organised by BSEM were also distributed on the occasion.
