Imphal, September 10, 2009: National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) is organising song competition for deprived section of the people in collaboration with Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS).

This was decided during an impromptu meeting held yesterday at the conference hall of Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) under the chairmanship of Mayangkar Aggarwal, the joint director of National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), stated in a DIPR release.

Aggarwal said the purpose of his visit is to formulate plan for the upliftment of HIV/AIDS patients and an effort to draw due attention on the plights of the HIV/AIDS patients in the North Eastern states particularly Manipur.

According to Aggarwal, there are 42,000 People Living With AIDS (PLWA) in Manipur among 2.47 million PLWA in India till 2007. HIV prevalent rate in India is 36 people out of 1000 people while the same in Manipur is 1.3/1000. He said, till March 2009, blood samples of 3,10,527 men were screened.

Among them 3,1972 tested positive for HIV/AIDS.

8053 blood samples of women were screened while 4363 tested positive.

625 death cases have been recorded during the period while there are 10.3 sero-positive cases.

Till May 2008, 92929 blood samples were screened in Imphal while 13279 were said to be positive.

Among the 12440 screened blood samples, 2078 tested positive in Churachandpur district.

In Ukhrul district 1713 tested positive among the 4772 screened blood samples.

In Senapati district10001 samples were screened while 1178 among them tested positive.

Among the 4291 screened samples in Tamenglong district, 106 tested positive.

In Chandel district 5873 samples were screened while 1204 tested positive.

According to record maintained till May 2008, 6.96% of HIV/AIDS patients in Manipur were between the age group of 0-10 years.

Age group of 11-20 contributed 5.61% of the HIV/AIDS populace.

53.10% were from the age group of 21-30.The HIV/AIDS patients between the age group of 31-40 were said to be 35.71% while 8.61% is said to be from the 41 and above.

One of the objectives of the competition is to work for the minimization of the prevalent rate of HIV/AIDS in the state.
