Need for bamboo policy discussed

A State-level workshop on the need for a Bamboo Policy in Manipur was held at the Conference Hall of Forest Department located at Sajenthong here today.
Inaugurating the workshop as Chief Guest, Dr Suresh Babu, Principal Secretary, Forest and Environment, Government of Manipur, said that since Bamboo has various uses in the state, there is the need to set up a Bamboo Policy in Manipur.
Various products can be made from bamboo and such eco-friendly products manufactured in Small Scale Industries are in high demand now-a-days.
The discussion on setting up of a Bamboo Policy in the state, where a number of intellectuals and experts would be sharing their views, is indeed the need of the hour.
The decision arrived at during the course of the discussion would be helpful in planning for a policy and we also need to come out with a draft policy in the regard, he added.
Delivering the Presidential address, Ak Rana, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Government of Manipur, said that we need to take the advice of experts at the time of coming up with a draft policy of the Bamboo Plan in the state.
The draft policy would be handed over to the Chief Secretary for further discussion.
Participating in the workshop as one of the resource persons,N Kipgen, Mission Director of National Bamboo Mission, Manipur, observed that a number of measures have been taken up for the promotion and preservation of bamboo in the state under National Bamboo Mission, Manipur.
A Bamboo Septum is also ready to come up at Langol, where a variety of bamboo species found in the state would be planted starting from June/July.
The inaugural function of the workshop was also attended by V Tualthang, Director, Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur as Guest of Honour.
