Charges framed in Sanjit case

The court of the Session Judge, Manipur East has framed charges against nine Police Commandos in connection with the killing Chungkham Sanjit in the infamous July 23, 2009 Khwairamband Bazar incident of police firing that also snubbed out the life of Thokchom Rabina, a young pregnant mother.
After hearing of the charge sheets already framed against the nine Police Commandos by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which carried out investigation into the incident, Session Judge, Manipur East U Kol Singh today framed charges for conducting the trial under different sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) .
In his ruling, the Session Judge charged that on July 23, 2009 at about 10.45 am, all the nine accused Police Commandos 'committed murder intentionally causing death of Chungkham Sanjit Meitei' .
Among the nine accused Police Commandos, Inspector Yumnam Munal Singh (51), Inspector Hijam Devendra (40), Head Constable Thounaojam Herojit (29) and Rifleman Ngangom Toyaima Singh (35) have been charged under Section 218 read with Section 34 of IPC.
Inspector Hijam Devendra Singh and Head Constable Thounaojam Herojit Singh have also been charged separately under Section 203 read with Section 34 of IPC.
Along with Inspector Hijam Devendra, Head Constable Thounaojam Herojit and Rifleman Ngangom Toiyaima , Constable Binoykumar Singh (28), Havildar Thokchom Jagat Singh (30), Rifleman Md Imran Khan (23), Head Constable Oinam Keshor Singh (30) and Constable Makan Kanchung Chothe (34) have also been charged under Section 302 read with Section 34 of IPC by the court.
It may be noted here that Chungkham Taratombi, mother of late Sanjit had filed a petition in the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench praying for necessary action against the Police Commandos involved in the killing of her son at a spot in between Mainu Pharmacy and a vehicle workshop along BT Road of Khwairamband Bazar on that fateful day of July 23, 2009.Acting on the petition, the High Court directed that a case be registered and CBI be roped in
for investigation.
On completion of its investigation, CBI framed charge sheets against the nine accused Police Commandos and handed over the same to court for necessary trial.
Consequently, the then Session Judge, Manipur East Ph Surendra started hearing of the charges.
But pronouncement of an order remained pending as Judge Surendra retired from service.
The incumbent Session Judge, Manipur East U Kol took up hearing of the charges all over again and pronounced the order today framing charges against the nine accused Police Commandos.
