Imphal, July 02 2020:
Even as the number of COVID-19 positive cases has been rising rapidly and continuously in the State, people's laxity regarding the safety measures they should take is also surging.
This was clearly evident today when police detained a larger number of people along Kanglapat for driving/riding vehicles without wearing face masks.
Some auto drivers were also detained for driving autos in defiance of the prohibition imposed by the Government.
They were later released after counselling.
Meanwhile, many people expressed strong displeasure against the Government's failure to impose any kind of restrictions on public meetings or gatherings which defy social distancing norms and seem directly or indirectly related to by-election.

The ongoing lockdown and the SOP issued by the Government seem to be victimising only the daily wage earners, remarked different sections of the society.
Auto driver Md Firoz confided that he is unable to ensure both ends meet as passenger auto service has been suspended for over three months.
He appealed to the Government to make an arrangement under which autos can resume service with reduced number of passengers and nominal hike in fare.
Pointing out that majority of the auto drivers are living hand to mouth, Firoz said that all of them are now facing a very miserable situation.
One vegetable vendor from Andro said that they have been facing many difficulties as the time of vending vegetables has been severely curtailed by the Government and police.
However, no authority took up any action even as public meetings/functions attended by large number of people were held which seemed to be indirectly related to by-election, she said.
She lamented that the lockdown victimises only daily wage earners and marginal workers.
