The 282th year of Puya Meithaba, the day on which Meetei Puyas (Old Scriptures) were consigned to flames was remembered today.
The Meetei National Front (MNF) observed the day with a function held at Citizen Club, Wangkhei Khunou, Soibam Leikai.
Leishemba Sanajoaba graced the function as chief guest.
Earlier, in the morning, led by Sairem Nilbir, a member of the Kangla Fort Board, people offered flowers at the Kangla Uttra where the Puyas had been consigned to flames at the instigation of Santidas Gosai, who introduced Vaishnavism in the state.
As chief guest of the function, Leishemba Sanajaoba observed that since the day of burning the puyas, the aged civilization of Manipur slow down.
The state faced many hardships in the aftermath of the burning of the holy books.
Many important write ups about the relationship among the people of different ethnic communities settling in the state had also been included in the burning.
This has resulted in faring the hill people away from the valley people, he observed.
Sairem Nilbir, a member of the Kangla Fort Board, stressed the need for awareness to the people on why the Puyas were eliminated expressing his opinion that it was for destroying the indigenous religion and scripts.
MNF organized the function at various parts of the district starting from January 25 with wearing of black badges to the students of various schools in Imphal and other parts of the state.
In another function held at Nungpal village of Chakpikarong, gifts were exchanged between the people of hills and valley.
