The 2010 annual general assembly of the United Committee Manipur (UCM) held at its Lamphel headquarters yesterday has resolved to sustain its activities for territorial and emotional integrity of Manipur on an even wider scale.
Apart from resolving To strengthen the bond of cordiality amongst various community in sync with the UCM motto of Peace, Unity and Integrity issues arising from time to time would be closely followed and pursued, the UCM session also decided to sustain its activities for maintaining territorial and emotional integrity through wider coverage and that the forthcoming Great June Uprising Day, observed every year on June 18 would be organised in a smooth manner.
The annual session was presided by its president Yumnamcha Dilipkumar with former advisors RK Ranendrajit and H Ibotombi Khuman, UCM's founder president Sapamcha Jadumani and former president K Lanngamba as special invitees.
A thorough deliberation on the prevailing law and order situation of Manipur, stage managed killings and violence against women were the other highlight of the annual session participated by representative of various UCM-affiliated units and public figures.
Speakers at the session noting lack of cooperation among the civil society organisations in the aftermath of the July 23 Khwairamband Keithel firing also stressed on the need for rapport and joint struggle to live upto the people's expectation.
The UCM congregation also reasserted its stand that sentiment and aspiration of the general public should be taken into account before any final decision is taken in the ongoing parleys between the Government of India and NSCN (IM).
Demanding that any development of the ongoing negotiation should be made public, speakers insisted that no decision should be detrimental to the interest of the State and its people.
Cautioning Government of Manipur against being entrapped by the Centre's cosmetic assurances, they further suggested that State authorities oppose all move by India to severe any part of manipur prey as a consequence of the proposed Indo-Myanmar boundary fencing.
Strong condemnations were made against the Government's alleged silence on the intrusion by Nagaland police personnel into Jessami area, Nagaland's Khuzama Gate inching closer towards manipur by about 2/3 kilometre from its previous location and lack of initiative to safeguard Manipur's territory in the Jiribam section of the inter-State boundary.
The general assembly also emphasised on introduction and effective implementation of inner line permit system to check influx of non-Manipuris into the State rather than advocate short-sighted policy that could backfire.
UCM functionaries were also advised to expand the body's activities by conducting inspection tours of far-flung hill district areas so as to understand hardships being endured by the hill people and chalk out appropriate measures to mitigate their problems.
