Different bodies condemn hospitals, demand stringent action

The All Zeliangrong Students' Union (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) and Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM) has expressed 'amazement' and strongly condemned the hospitals and its authorities who denied entry and treatment to a pregnant woman Kanpatliu Kamei, subsequently leading to her death along with her unborn baby, on August 6.The statement by the joint students' bodies has fully condemned the negligence, irresponsibility and inhuman act of the doctors, nurses and its staff of those hospitals who denied treatment to the patient in a case of emergency.
However, the bodies have extended its appreciation to the Health Department for taking up a quick action in constituting an Enquiry Committee to look into the matter, it stated.
The unions also urged the hospitals to extend co-operation to the Enquiry Committee and requested the committee to submit its report within the stipulated time, failing which the students' bodies will initiate all forms of democratic agitations, it cautioned.
The unions also extended its condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family and prays for the soul of the departed to rest in peace.
In the meantime, the Inpui Naga Union (INU), Inpui Naga Women's Union (INWU) and All Inpui Students Union (AISU) in a joint press statement stated that they are shocked and dismayed over the death of (L) Kanpatliu Kamei due to the systemic failure of the healthcare infrastructure in the state, particularly in the hill districts.
A press release signed by Kumar Inkah, general secretary of the Inpui Naga Union on behalf of the three CSOs mentioned that they were perturbed by the careless attitude of the various Government Hospitals particularly JNIMS and RIMS and private hospitals like Imphal Hospital, Raj Medicity and Shija Hospital.
Complete the process of the enquiry committee set up by the health department within the stipulated period and suspend all the medical staff, doctors and nurses involved in the gross denial of basic rights, he demanded and asked the committee concerned to be fair and just in their investigation.
He also urged the State Govt to check the various health infrastructures in the hills particularly in the remote districts, Subdivisions and villages to make necessary arrangements for maternity care in all districts with provisions for ambulances during emergency cases and to provide compensation to the bereaved family.
The nearest District Hospital, located at Senapati is reportedly about 20 km from Makuilongdi village, he said and appealed to the health department to immediately send medical staff at the village dispensary at the earliest.
The PWD, Govt of Manipur should also repair dilapidated roads which connect remote villages of Senapati DHQ, he added.
On the other hand, the Rongmei Naga Students' Organisation Manipur (RNSOM) and the Kabui Mothers' Association (KAMA), Manipur, in separate statements have also strongly condemned the hospitals leading to the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child on August 6 .
While appreciating the swift response of the Government by setting up a committee to look into the matter, the bodies have appealed to the State Government to take stringent action against those responsible for the incident.
RNSOM in its statement also appealed the Government to send adequate doctors and medical staff to Tamenglong, Nungba, Longmai and Khoupum, as sanctioned in the paper and said that it will pursue the matter seriously till satisfactory initiative is taken by the latter.
