COVID-19: More hill bodies extend help

Imphal, May 02 2020: Many from hill districts continue to provide United Committee Manipur (UCM) with vegetables to be distributed to people affected by the lockdown due to coronavirus.

Sadar Hills Thrift and Credit Cooperative Society (SCOPTACS) through Kuki Cooperative Society, Kangpokpi district presented vegetables from Maohing village to UCM today.

A total of 25 including members of the Kuki Cooperative Society and representatives of Maohing village, Kangpokpi presented the vegetables to UCM members at its office at Lamphelpat.

UCM in return provided the society with rice.

Kuki Cooperative Society president Helin Kipgen, vice president Yamlim Haokip were present.

Speaking to media persons, the society's spokesperson, Ngamkhohao Haokip said that the vegetables were presented to the UCM for distribution to people in the valley who are being affected by the coronavirus inflicted lockdown.

"It is natural that we help each other as brothers in times of hardship and crisis," he said adding such gesture would also help bring about unity among the hills and the valley.

Lauding the society for its help, UCM president Sunil Karam said that the gesture carries an emotional value which would strengthen the bond of brotherhood among the people of the hills and valley.

The asisistance being provided by many villages, societies and organisations to the UCM and valley people amid the lockdown is proof that UCM's dream of unity is turning into reality, he said.

UCM is distributing the donated vegetables to affected people and frontline workers, he said.

Meanwhile, the vegetables have been distributed to daily wage earners/workers and stranded students who are staying in rented rooms at Game Village Zone-I, Moirang Hanuba Leirak and Dewlahland (in coordination with Mao Union Imphal), said a statement of UCM.

Earlier on May 1, UCM received vegetables from Sirarakhong Baptist Convention and Sirarakhong Village Authority.

The vegetables were distributed to frontline workers at Keishampat junction area, it said.

Acknowledging the efforts of the frontline workers in fighting coronavirus, UCM also advised people to strictly maintain physical distancing and effect the lockdown.

Government should pay extra attention to stranded workers and students and alleviate their condition, it said.

On the other hand, villagers of Sinakeithei and Ringwui village of Ukhrul also donated vegetables to Works Minister Th Biswajit today.

Representatives of the villages presented the vegetables to Th Biswajit and his wife, Junreiwon at the Minister's Ningomthong residence.

Tangkhul Shanao Long, Sinakeithei, president Chonmithing Khamrang said that the villagers had arranged the vegetables for the Minister's wife who hails from Ukhrul and people of the valley being affected by the lockdown.

Thanking the villages and MP Lorho Pfoze, who had earlier presented vegetables to his family, Biswajit said that the vegetables will be distributed to people of Thongju Assembly Constituency.

Biswajit's wife Junreiwon also thanked the villagers for remembering her and the valley people during such hard times.
