Imphal, May 02 2018:
Manipur State Transport (MST) drivers, contractors and their family members staged a sit in protest at MST office complex at Moirangkhom today, condemning the arrest of the bus driver and conductor of an Imphal to Moreh MST bus by Tengnoupal district police on April 26 after drugs were allegedly found on board the said bus.
The protesters held placards decrying the act of shifting the blame to the bus driver and the conductor, demanding the authority to arrest the real owner of the drug and to release the arrested individuals at the earliest.
Speaking to media persons, one of the protesting drivers asked how the people operating the services are supposed to minutely check or know each and every passenger and their cargoes/ luggages.
It may be mentioned that at around 2.30 pm of April 26, Tengnoupal district police seized 28 packets of brown sugar (weighing around 401 grams) from inside a carton box on board a bus (bearing registration number MN-06B/0500) coming towards Imphal, at Tengnoupal police check gate.
The driver of the bus, identified as Senjam Ajit (40) of Nongdam Mamang Leikai and the conductor, Robert Hanpi Simte (37) of Lungthul (Churachandpur), were arrested by police after the owner of the drugs was not found.
