Villagers hold rally on importance of environment protection

Thoubal, June 15 2024:
North Eastern Environmental Protection Committee organised a public rally today promoting the idea of preserving the environment.
The rally was flagged off from Nongpok Sekmai NESA Ground in Thoubal district and culminated at Ukhongsang Kangjeibung Lampak.
During the rally, banners and placards which read 'No Water No Life', 'No Water No Food', 'Save Water Save Environment', 'Stop quarry activities at river sources, hills', Government should take intense measures to preserve hills and rivers', etc.
Participating in the rally, a woman named Ningthoujam Ibemhal highlighted that quarrying activities at the origin/sources of Engourok, Kakmayai and Ningen rivers have led to ecological imbalance and depletion of water sources in the region.
Stating that the residents of Nongpok Sekmai and surrounding villages namely Sikhong, Sikhong Bazar, Nongpok Sekmai, Kakmayai, Ukhongsang, Hijam Khunou, Nongpok Lourembam, Pechi, Salungpham, Aripat, Lanmeithet, Tabul, Lila Kabong, Heinganglok, Somther and so on are dependent on Engourok, Kakmayai and Ningen rivers for their day to day use and other activities.
In view of the importance of these rivers in the lives of the villagers, she urged all concerned to refrain from quarrying activities in this region to maintain the ecological balance and preserve the water sources.
Lastly she sought support from the Government and civil society organisations (CSOs) towards the cause of the environment initiated by the villagers.
