Imphal, July 17 2017:
The Youth Foundation for Fitness and Service (YOFFS) has proposed a public meeting including social and voluntary organisations to deliberate on the causes of frequent floods in Manipur .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, YOFFS general secretary Dr IS Konthoujam remarked that the recent flood took the proportion of a natural calamity .
Even though natural factors were responsible for this year's floods, the volumes of flood waters were quite huge .
In addition to the natural factors, other factors like absence of proper drainage systems, failure to dredge river beds in time, failure to strengthen river embankments, incomplete Loktak development works, absence of proper plan to stock water and divert excess water have been contributing to disastrous floods, Dr IS Konthoujam said.
To identify the causes of floods and take up all possible preventive measures are primary duties of a Government .
As such, YOFFS submitted a representation to the Chief Minister today, with one copy forwarded to the Governor .
Another copy of the same representation has also been dispatched to the Prime Minister, he said .
The representation contains a proposal that the Government should give an opportunity to discuss the Government's plans/projects to check floods together with experts and the general public, he conveyed.
