Imphal, May 06 2014:
The 222nd birth anniversary of Maharaj Narsingh was observed today at Sagolband Mabudhou Mantri Leikai under the aegis of Maharaj Narsingh Memorial Committee and Shree Shree Govindaji Temple Board.
IG AR(S) Maj Gen SC Dwivedi, retired Session Judge C Upendra and Sahitya Akademi Awardee E Sonamani attended the function as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Speaking at the function, Maharaj Narsingh Memorial Committee member Dr RK Bedajit said that it was the second time the committee was observing Maharaj Narsingh's birth anniversary.
Although people generally observed death anniversaries of heroes and martyrs, the committee has been observing Maharaj Narsingh's birth anniversary as the committee is of the opinion that birth anniversaries are more important than death anniversaries.
Maharaja Narsingh was not a god but he had many godly qualities.
Had Narsingh not taken birth on the soil of Manipur, the State could be still under Burmese occupation.
Narsingh was a great leader who dedicated his whole life for the cause of the nation, Bedajit said.
Later different awards were given to eight selected persons before the function culminated with a Thang-Ta performance.
