The 18th Arambam Samarendra Martyrdom anniversary was observed at various parts of the State as well as outside the State today.
The main event was organised at Khurai Nandeibam Leikai under the aegis of Social Standard Club.
People paid floral tributes to the photo of Arambam Samarendra.
Poetry recitation as well as felicitation programme for successful students in the HSLC exam was also held.
Nupi Samaj advisor Keisham Taruni, Nupi Samaj president Thokchom Rumani, AMKIL president Phanjoubam Sakhi Leima, Nongpok Leingak Apunba Lup president Yumlembam Memma, AH Manipur Tami Chingmi Apunba Lup (Tami Chingmi) president Soibam Momon Leima, Khurai Nandeibam Leikai Gram Panchayat Pradhan Yumnam Chitra Devi and Gram Panchayat Ward No 1 Member Thokchom Runabala Leima attended the event as the presidium members.
On the other hand, Arambam Samarendra Memorial Trust also organised the 13th Arambam Samarendro Memorial Lecture under the theme 'Manipur and Development; Political Economy of Collusion' at Lamyanba Shanglen, Konung Mamang.
Speaking at the programme, Manipur University Economics Department Head, Professor Amar Yumnam said that Manipur became impoverished after 1949 and claimed that the Central Government's Act East Policy is not aimed at bringing development to Manipur.
He said that history is very important for humans and past events have deep connection with the present.
The present scenario of Manipur is the result of various actions in history.
1949 is an important year for the State as the face of politics changed for Manipur.
Change and development are constant.
However, increase in number of buildings and the number of cars/vehicles does not denote development as development means the rise in standard of living of the people and their culture, he added.
Amar Yumnam conveyed that the development seen outside the State or abroad are not applicable in the same way to Manipur as development needs to come from the people and the society.
Every people, community or group have their own tradition and culture and ethics as well as land ownership tradition.
These have been passed down from generation to generation from time immemorial.
Development needs to be based on these factors, he opined.
The Professor claimed that all developed Nations have some sort of link between their politics and the ethics of the people and the society but Manipur is devoid of such a link which is the main reason for the lack of development.
The people of the State still have no proper way or channel to express their likes and dislikes, he said.
Pointing out that Manipur became one of the poorest and impoverished States after 1949, Amar Yumnam said that India's Look East Policy has not provided any kind of benefits to the people of Manipur till date.
The technology used for developing Imphal to Moreh road under the Act East Policy is not used anywhere in the world, he claimed and added that many hills have been destroyed for the construction of the road, which is a practice not seen anywhere in the worid.
Even the India-Myanmar friendship road being developed is one of the worst roads present in Myanmar, he claimed.
On the other hand, Senior Assistant Professor Chirfglen Meisnam minutely reviewed the memorial lecture while MU Economics Department Associate Professor Dr Chongtham Priyoranjan presided the lecture.
A discussion session was also held after the lecture.
It may be mentioned that the memorial lecture has been organised since 2006 .
