Retirement age for College teachers to be extended

The State cabinet has resolved to extend the retirement age of College teachers from 62 to 65 year along with the implementation of Higher Education policy in the State.
A meeting of the State Cabinet was held at the Chief Minister's Cabinet Secretariat with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh in the chair today.
Briefing mediapersons about the Cabinet meeting, Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro, who is also the spokesperson of the government, informed that the service period of College teachers was discussed for extension during the Cabinet meeting today and it finally resolved to extend the retirement age of College teachers from 62 to 65 years.
The Minister said that there are at present 28 Government Colleges, 12 Aided Colleges and 31 Private Colleges in the State.
The Government would also consider what can be done for the aided college teachers under the UGC guidelines.
The Minister went to informed that the number of students enrolling in government colleges has increased manifold.
In 2008-09, the number of students in government colleges was 12,150 .
The number was increased to 22,387 in 2009-10.In 2010-11 academic session, the number further rose to 30,950 and in 2011-12, a total number of 35,569 students got admitted in government colleges.
The number was further increased to 42,508 during the academic session 2012-13 .
On other resolution adopted by the State Cabinet today, Minister Okendro conveyed that it has approved recruitment of regular Principals in Government Colleges through Manipur Public Service Commission.
There are around 1019 regular teachers in Government Colleges.
But in comparison to the sanctioned number of posts, there are at present 284 vacant posts for regular teachers in various government colleges.
Over and above this, another 35 college teachers would be retiring by the end of February this year.
The increment in the basic pay for the part time college teachers was also discussed in the Cabinet meeting today.
At present, there are 355 part-time teachers under Grade A, 76 teachers under Grade B and 53 teachers under Grade C.The improvement in their service condition under the UGC guidelines would also be discussed.
If the guidelines of UGC are implemented, there would be some lecturers who would be promoted to Assistant Professors and Professors, the Minister stated, while assuring that the implementation of Higher Education Policy in the State would also be looked into.
Furthermore, Minister Okendro informed that the Cabinet meeting also minutely discussed lack of nurses in the health centres of different districts of the State and resolved to appoint 21 GNMs and 200 ANMs.
The State Cabinet also gave its approval to drafting of Imphal Municipal Council building Bye Law 2013.It also decided to appoint 22 posts of Manipur Forest Service grade II (Assistant Conservator of Forest) through Manipur Public Service Commission.
The Cabinet also decided to appoint one post of Under Secretary (Law) in Department of Law and Legislative Affairs.
It also discussed over the Warrant of Precedence and for construction of a VVIP Guest House in Imphal, the Minister added.
