Road christened as ' Subedar Khelendra Singh road' inaugurated

Subedar Khelendra Singh road was inaugurated today at Silchar Jhalupara by Niharendra Thakur, Chairman of the Silchar Municipality Board.
The inaugural function was attended by SMB Chairman Niharendra Thakur as chief guest and Khelendra Subedar Road Development Committee president Kh Kamlakanta as functional president while Ng Basanta Kumar General secretary of the Assam Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, AMSP, Ng Ibetombi former Vice principal GC College Silchar, Nonigopa Singh, K Rabindra and Dr KN Chand attended the function as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occassion, Silchar Municipal Chairman Niharendra Thakur stated that SMB is pleased to declared Ward No 25 road as Subedar Khelendra Road, who was one of the veteran British Army officials.
History revealed that Subedar Khelendra, who was the recipient of Queen Elizabeth's medal among Meetei British Army official, was the first Manipuri settled in the present Assam rifles cantonments area, Silchar.
History also revealed that Subedar Khelendra was highly respected by the top level British officials.
While speaking to the media persons during the inaugural function, historian Dr Kunjala Yendrembam said that Subedar Khelendra was the first Manipuri who got gun salute and high military respect during his funeral outside Manipur.
