Vashum underscores benefits of livestock insurance policies

Animal Husbandry Minister Khashim Vashum has underscored the importance of livestock insurance policies and its benefits for farmers.
He was speaking at the general meeting of Ukhrul Piggery Farmers Producer Company Ltd (UPFPO Co Ltd) at Ukhrul Town Hall this morning.
On the occasion, the visiting Minister unveiled the logo and Incorporation Certificate of UPFPO Co Ltd.
Speaking as the chief guest of the meeting, Minister Khashim Vashum stated that the Manipur Legislative Assembly has passed a Bill on livestock insurance policy to compensate farmers for the loss of animals.
According to him, the Government will bear 80 % the cost of the livestock to reduce the burden on farmers.

He further stated that, Manipur Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department has issued 32 Veterinary Mobile Vehicle Unit for emergency veterinary response service to ensure services in all districts covering the remote villages and in order to strengthen livestock.
Farmers have to dial 1962 (phone number) to avail the services and will be provided year-round access to meet the emergency and critical care demands of livestock in the necessary quantity and quality.
In order to claim the insurance, farmers have to obtain certificates from the Veterinary Department in time, he added.
Khashim further stressed on timely vaccination to prevent diseases while adding that adequate vaccines have been stocked in the Department to ensure safety of livestock to increase local production.
The Transport Minister also announced that slaughter houses installed with freezers will be constructed in five districts in the first phase including Ukhrul district this year.
Meanwhile Dingringam Kamei, SDO, Ukhrul urged the organization to pursue GI tag for Tangkhul indigenous pig (Haohok) .
According to him, Haohok has a peculiar and good taste as compared to other pigs found across the State.
