Sahitya Thoupang Lup celebrates World Press Day

As observed across the globe, Sahitya Thoupang Lup (Sathoulup) celebrated World Press Day at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal today.
It was attended by Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Manipur, Director, Dr Th Charanjeet Singh and All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) president, Bijoy Kakchingtabam as presidium members.
During the event, the Thiyam Premkumar Award for the year 2024 was presented to Pradip Phanjoubam, editor of web journal Imphal Review of Arts and Politics.
The award carries a cash price of Rs 10000, citation and shawl.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Th Charanjeet Singh said that World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day is observed every year on May 3 to raise awareness about the importance of freedom of the press and recognise the challenges encountered by journalists.
He asserted that the Day also marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991 .
Bijoy Kakchingtabam expressed concern over the declining press freedom and rise in threats to the safety of journalists in the country, especially the North Eastern region.
