Imphal, October 25 2016:
The Hmar Youth Association(HYA) has denounced the October 8 resolution of the HoDs/Deans of MU for admission to the varsity, stating that it is against the CEI (Reservation in admission) Amendment Act 2012 .
The HYA conveyed their shock and dismay towards the response and indifference "of not only the University authority towards the rightful indignation and demands of the tribal students but also the State forces which, according to eye-witnesses were instrumental in making the already tense situation" worse.
A peaceful rally was organized by the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur yesterday in front of the University gate, which was met with "crowd control" measures by the State forces during whihc five ST students were injured.
The statement said the HYA is appalled by the "callous attitude" shown by some civilians present during the agitations, who encouraged the State police "to beat up or even kill the protestors." Some of the protestors alleged that they were "stoned or aggressively spoken to by some of these 'spectators'" .
The statement concluded with the reminder that the tribal students are protesting for their "Constitutionally and legally given" rights and they wish to see justice be served to all those who have faced injustice.
