Imphal, April 15 2019: A young woman died at JNIMS soon after delivering a baby following which the aggrieved family and their relatives vandalised the hospital on the ground that the woman died because of laxity on the party of attending doctors.

It is said that many properties of JNIMS including two ambulances had been vandalised and the incident has severely affected normal functions of the hospital.

Emergency service as well as OPD have been closed, no new patients have been admitted and routine operations have also been suspended.

On the other hand, the dead body of the woman is being kept at RIMS mortuary after post mortem.

A JAC constituted in connection with the death has set a deadline of 48 hours to dismiss the doctors responsible for the death.

Meanwhile, the deceased has been identified as one Longjam (O) Ichantombi (19) w/o L Rojen of Nongdam, Imphal East district.

Family members said that Ichantombi was taken to JNIMS on April 12 and she underwent cesarean section the next day.

Through CS, Ichantombi delivered a baby body and she was brought out to the ward.

However, soon after, Ichantombi complained of great pain and the attending doctor was promptly informed but none of the doctors came to attend to Ichantombi.

As her condition grew worse, the family urged one of the staff present there to call a doctor.

Sometime later, a doctor came and examined Ichantombi.

Saying that the woman's condition was critical, they applied oxygen inhaler.

But a few minutes later, the family was told that Ichantombi did not respond to their treatment and she had expired.

On the other hand, taking strong exception to the vandalism carried by the family of Ichantombi and their relatives, PG doctors and nurses staged a protest demonstration inside the hospital campus yesterday.

As the doctors and nurses were staging a sit-in-protest, around 300 youth from Nongdam came to JNIMS and they confronted security forces deployed around the hospital.

Although the confrontation cut short the sit-in-protest, police somehow managed to bring the situation under control.

Later, the youth went to the quarters of Lamlai AC LA Ksh Biren and sought justice.

A JAC was formed and its representatives held a meeting with Chief Minister N Biren yesterday evening.

The two sides came to an understanding on certain points and accordingly post mortem of Ichantombi's body was held at RIMS.

It was also agreed to institute an enquiry into the death of Ichantombi and award befitting punishment to all the guilty.

A memorandum submitted by the JAC to the Chief Minister demanded dismissal of the doctors responsible for the death within 48 hours.

It further demanded the authority concerned to take up effective measures to prevent Government doctors from practising in Government hospitals/clinics.

However, the body of Ichantombi has not been claimed till the time of filing this report.
