Imphal, October 24 2013:
All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) has celebrated its 24th foundation day at Manipur Press Club here today.
Delivering the keynote address of the occasion, Ksh Sujata, General Secretary AMAWOVA stressed on ever increasing crimes against women, drug and border issues in the State.
Speaking as chief guest at the occasion, Prof Ksh Bimola, Department of Political Science, MU observed that women and youths have been moving as collective force against torture, ill treatment and killing of innocent people by army under the shadow of Arm Forces Special Power's Act (AFSPA).
However, the movement has been lessened nowadays.
During 1904 and 1939, the role of women vendors in such movements was laudable and now it is the contrary of what had happened then.
Appreciating the existence of AMAWOVA, Prof Bimola added that the association was established in 1990 around the time when AFSPA was imposed in the State, and has been moving against the draconian law and crimes against women.
Dr Ch Sheelaramani, HOD English, DMC Arts asserted that it is necessary to know and acknowledge our lifestyle, tradition and behaviour to bring a change in the culture.
At the occasion, Prof Chinglen Maisnam, Economics Department, MU stressed that women faced worst treatment in places where customary law is strictly enforced.
Stating that women in such places do not enjoy freedom till date, Prof Maisnam called for unity among the women.
Perfect ideology and effective organisation are much needed to fight issues in the State.
The occasion was also attended by L Memchoubi, President PLMPAM and Y Kunjarani, President AMAWOVA.
