Imphal, March 15 2015:
The International Women's Day was observed today at Singjamei Community Hall under the aegis of the Singjamei Apunba Nupi Lup (SANLUP) .
PHE Minister I Hemochandra, SANLUP president S Ibeni, former Principal of DM College A Sanahanbi attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the gathering, Hemochandra underscored the importance of greater women empowerment in order to bring a progressive and vibrant society.
He appealed to all women organisations of the State to work with greater dedication in the greater interest of the society.
He also acknowledged the pro-active roles shouldered by Manipuri women in different socio-economic and political issues which confront the society from time to time.
Resource person H Jayenta pointed out the necessity of economic empowerment for alleviation of women's status in the society.
There is a growing need to train girl students on self defence, he opined.
Social worker L Ranbir observed that Manipuri women enjoy respectable position in the society.
They have been shouldering huge responsibilities not only at the domestic level but also at the community and State levels.
The beauty of Manipuri culture and traditions needs to be highlighted across the planet.
However, violence against women has been rising at an unprecedented rate.
Even as many civilians including women have been victimized by a series of bomb blasts, all the preventive measures taken up by the Government is far from satisfactory, remarked another speaker.
One member of SANLUP expressed strong disapproval against the manner in which VDF personnel have been checking commuters at Singjamei Chingamakhong.
She said that the authority concerned has been looking the other way when many security personnel have been abusing their uniforms without any scruples.
Meanwhile, the District Women Committees of Imphal East and Imphal West of United NGOs Mission, Manipur (UNMM) celebrated International Women's Day under the theme, 'Let's make it happen - Repeal AFSPA - a symbol of oppression and injustice' at Yumjao Lairembi community hall, Keishampat junction today.
