Trucks set on fire, red alert on NH-53
Times of India | TNN | Sep 17, 2011, 10.22PM IST
The forces have been put on red alert along the deplorable NH-53 connecting Imphal with Silchar after suspected economic blockade supporters torched five trucks and dismantled a Hamilton bridge in the Naga-dominated Tamenglong district.
Denouncing the state government's alleged attempt to bifurcate the Naga-dominated areas to create new districts in Manipur, the United Naga Council (UNC) has been imposing indefinite economic blockade on all national highways in the 'Naga areas'.
UNC's stir came after the self-explanatory Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) intensified its economic blockade on NH-39 and NH-53 in pursuit of its decades-old demand to create a separate Sadar Hills district.
