Uplift of farmers, workers stressed

Emphasising on the role of farmers and workers in the development in a society, social activist Dr Kiran Yendrembam has said that progress of a society depends on improving the lives of farmers and workers.
Speaking at the 5th foundation day function of Apunba Sinmeegi Chaokhat Thourang Lup (ASCTL) held at its Hatta Golapati office, here, on Sunday, Dr Kiran expressed concern over the backwardness of farmers and workers in the state and said that there is a strong need for proactive initiative from the government to improve their lives.
At the same time, farmers and workers also need to bring accountability, transparency and dedication in their works.
Waiting for government initiatives is not always the right decision as it will not bring the much needed progress, the activist said.
Socio-political activist Potsangbam Sonamani appreciated ASCTL for providing skill training to displaced people staying in relief camps.
He also expressed happiness over the recent report of crochet dolls made by displaced people garnering global attention, and encouraged the public to start small businesses and expand their reach gradually.
ASCTL president Oinam Inao spoke on the journey of the organisation and recalled how they managed to derive a fund of Rs 10 lakh from the initial funding of Rs 1000 and monthly contribution of Rs 10 made by each of the members.
He also informed that the organisation will launch a new initiative to provide financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to select new entrepreneurs.
Social workers RK Joychandra, Tokpam Naobi and Ibemcha Heirangkhongjam were also present on the occasion.
