Imphal, November 18 2023:
A concept note is reportedly under preparation to shorten Imphal-Ukhrul road (NH-102) by 17 Kms by constructing a new road stretch.
According to sources, the concept note proposes construction of a four lane highway from Imphal to Ukhrul which mostly covers the valley area.
The existing Imphal-Ukhrul road is 87 Kms long while the proposed new road envisages to shorten the travel distance between Ukhrul and Imphal to 70 Kms.
It is said that the MLA Ram Muivah elected from Ukhrul Assembly Constituency has submitted the proposal to Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam for consideration.
Sources said that the same proposal was also submitted to the Chief Minister last month while the latter was at Ukhrul.
Chief Engineer of PWD has reportedly entrusted the Executive Engineer of PWD Ukhrul Division to draft the concept note.
It is further said that the proposed 70 Kms Imphal-Ukhrul road will begin from Chingmeirong Khongnang Ani Karak, cross Imphal River and head to Yaingangpokpi, reach Mahadev through a tunnel and proceed towards Thoubal River and Litan before reaching Lamlang Gate.
From Lamlang Gate, the road will head to Chingmei, Tolloi Junction and connect to National Highway 102 to reach Ukhrul Town.
As per the sources, the proposed Imphal-Ukhrul road will mostly cover valley areas with only the stretch from Tolloi Junction to Ukhrul town covering hilly terrain.
The sources continued that the Government will carry out a survey to mark locations for building bridges, tunnels and draft a Detailed Project Report (DPR) after the concept note is prepared.
The tentative date to implement the project, however, is still not known.
The sources further said that the proposed road, if implemented, will bring Imphal and Ukhrul closer which is the second largest district in Manipur, apart from promoting tourism.
The proposal, however, hasn't been submitted to the Government of India.
