Public advised regular checking to prevent glaucoma

In connection with World Glaucoma Week, which is being observed from March 10 to 16, NPCB & VI, National Health Mission, Medical Directorate organised a programme under the theme 'Uniting for a glaucoma-free world' at the Lamphelpat complex of State Ophthalmic Cell, here, on Friday.
Speaking as chief guest of the programme, Health Services director Dr Oinam Sanahanbi stressed that as the eyes are important organs and nobody wants to be visually impaired, everyone should opt for regular checkup of eyes to prevent from contracting Glaucoma.
It is a preventable condition and as such, the programme has been organised with the aim to spread awareness amongst the masses about the same.
Noting that around 90 per cent of the population have no idea about glaucoma as it shows almost no symptom, she said that the condition can be diagnosed through eye screening.
In addition, people below 40 years of age should have their eyes checked every two to four years, those above 40 once every two to three years, and above 60 once a year.
She then urged the people to avail the screening facility at the OPD of State Ophthalmic Cell.
Presided over by NPCB & VI Manipur nodal officer Dr Vikram Singh Khoisnam, film actor Bonny Gurumayum also attended the programme as guest of honour.
