State to join nationwide protest on Feb 16

The nationwide general strike and Grameen Bandh (rural shutdown) being called by a joint forum of trade unions and farmers' bodies on February 16 to protest anti-worker, anti-farmer and anti-national policies of the central government, will also be enforced in Manipur, declared All India Trade Union Congress Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar.
Addressing media persons at Irabot Bhawan, BT Road, here, on Thursday, L Sotinkumar, who is also convenor of the Joint Coordinating Committee, informed that a joint convention participated by representatives of farmer bodies in the state, central trades union and independent sectoral federations including banks, LIC, postal service, BSNL and others registered in the trade union, was held at Irabot Bhawan on Wednesday.
The convention, in addition to discussing the strategies to launch the nationwide general strike in Manipur, also resolved to urge the state and the central governments to bring an end to the prevailing crisis in the state through political solution, establish Highway Protection Force and construct fence along the Indo-Myanmar border, he said.
Sotinkumar further informed that the committee has been entrusted to chalk out line of actions to make the nationwide general strike effective in the state.
As part of the protest, aU banks in the state will remain closed and staff will stage sit-in protest at respective head offices.
Likewise, LIC, post office, BSNL employees will stage protest in their respective head offices while workers in unorganised sectors will join the protest across the state, he added.
